Our Volunteers
Personal Investment
The RICD Wheelchair Project strives to promote the kind of work environment that fosters a strong connection between the workers and their work. Especially when working with the livelihood and well-being of others, this personal investment into the quality of care directly translates to an experience that is unique to the Wheelchair Project.
Every patient is treated as an individual and their needs are assessed and addressed as such, with each fitting being given the highest degree of attention as possible and every reasonable effort made to ensure that patient walks away with the tools they require to live their life to its fullest.
Our team of volunteers and staff are a mix of young and old, experienced and new, and skill sets that range from welding and metalwork to sewing and upholstery to computers and 3D modelling and many, many more. We capitalize on these differing backgrounds by encouraging workers to design and develop a project they would like to pursue during their time here. These projects range in scope from re-designed organization of our work areas to custom made butterfly harnesses or any number of other ideas designed to either improve service or improve our facility. These proposals are evaluated based on merit and potential with approved projects receiving funding and time allotment.
Diverse backgrounds
Everything in life carries with it positives and negatives, pros and cons, benefits and challenges. Working with volunteers is no different. While we may not be able to predict next year what talent or skills we will have to work with, exposure to such a wide variety or different aptitudes over the years has provided a lot of advancement that would otherwise not have happened. We have been honored to see some truly amazingly talented people come through the Wheelchair Project and by learning and adapting from the best in everyone we have been able to improve almost every aspect of our work over the years. Today we are more prolific than ever before and yet the quality of the fittings and repairs we do has also improved dramatically, proving that you don’t have to sacrifice quality for quantity if you have the right tools and use those tools appropriately. Do you have a skill or aptitude you would like to contribute? Contact us today if you are interested in participating in this amazing work!
Deeper Motivation
Relying on volunteers will inherently attract fewer people to the work you are doing, but the caliber of those who do come motivated by something deeper than a paycheck will produce 3x their paid peers.
