Years of Growth

1999

The Wheelchair Project is established under the Northern Child Development Center by Dr. Samai Sirithongthawarn and Douglas Tell and import the first shipment of wheelchairs in partnership with Wheels of Hope, USA.

2002

Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana becomes patron to the Wheelchair Project and Northern Child Development Center, as the hospital is renamed the Rajanagarindra Institute of Child Development in her honor and signifying the new status.

2005

The Wheelchair Project reaches 1,000 wheelchairs individually fit and given away to people in need, as news spreads and distribution events being carried out in locations all around the country of Thailand.

2010

Following the tragic passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, patronage of the RICD and the Wheelchair Project passes on to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn who still remains the Royal Sponsor today.

2012

The Wheelchair Project receives the Excellent Ethics Award from the Department of Mental Health, Thailand in recognition for its contributions to helping those affected by disabilities.

2013

The Wheelchair Project is awarded the Thai Public Service Award and continues to earn a reputation for providing high-quality services providing wheelchairs and mobility aids for people affected by disabilities.

2016

The Wheelchair Project marks its 10,000th wheelchair provided, custom fit to meet the needs of the recipient, as the quality of work continues to improve along with overall program efficiency.

2018

RICD Wheelchair Project begins its initiative to train and establish new wheelchair service centers throughout Thailand as demand and available stock grows beyond the Wheelchair Project’s capacity.
